FAQ: Languages
Available Languages
Which languages are available for Translate@Home, multilingual broadcasts, manual closed captions?
All existing languages are possible. Should a particular (real) language not be available in Clevercast, please contact our support team.
This is also the case for audio languages and closed captions in simulive streams.
Is it possible to add 'custom' language names to the player?
For Translate@Home and multilingual broadcasts, this is possible. We have added the options 'Original' and 'Translation' to the list of languages, which suffices for most scenarios with 'custom' language names. 'Original' and 'Translation' can be used for both live and Video on-Demand.
You can't add your own 'custom' language names, but we can do it for you upon request (well in advance of your event). However, please note that:
- This requires modifications to Clevercast and a custom upgrade, for which an additional cost of €200 applies.
- By default, the custom languages will only be available in live streams, and not in Video on-Demand. It is possible to add them for VoD as well, but this will require more development and result in a higher cost.
Custom languages behave like the real languages, except for the native video player on iOS devices. By default, iOS uses a native video player to play (live) streams, which converts the ISO 639 codes for each language to the language selectable in the player's dropdown (eg. 'en' will be displayed as 'English'). However, 'custom' languages have no real ISO 639 code, we 'create' one for them (eg. 'ls' for 'Leichte Sprache'). Therefore, the iOS player won't recognize the ISO 639 code and will display a selection that consists of both code and language name (eg. 'ls (Leichte Sprache)' instead of 'Leichte Sprache'). This is also the case for the custom 'Original' and 'Translation' languages.
Note: there is a workaround for this, by using the Clevercast player on iOS instead of the native player. In that case, the custom languages are displayed 100% correctly. But as a result of this, the video player on iOS will not be able to go completely fullscreen. Therefore, we usually recommend using the native iOS player, unless objections to the 'custom' language display make this impossible. Should you want to use Clevercast player on iOS, go to your Player profile (via the 'Media' > 'Players' menu) and set 'Force use of Clevercast player controls on iOS (disable pause on iOS)' to 'Yes'.
